Some of you will be aware that David John Williams (the younger) has been training all winter with the above championships in mind. At lunchtime today, David finished second in his 800 metres heat in 2:01.43 to qualify for the semi finals. Those semi-finals have just happened - David has just messaged me to say that he finished second again in 2:00:54 to qualify for tomorrow's final. The final is at 19:48.
Hopefully we can bring you news of that race at tomorrow's Announcements.
Go David! I'm feeling quite excited........

He came 4th overall and under 2 mins in the final - winner was 155 or so I think

brilliant time.

is this a club record for 800 meters indoors ?

An interesting question, James.
No it's not a club record, as David himself ran 1:59.55 in Cardiff on the 4 February.
As an endurance-based club, not many of our members ever race over 800 metres (which is a shame, because they'd benefit hugely if they did). And of course, fewer still run 800 metres indoors.
A good example of a well known local athlete running this event at championship level is James Thie. James ran 1:53.56 to win the World Indoor Masters M35 championship in Budapest 4 years ago (on his way to a brilliant triple gold in the 800/1500/3000). To put that into perspective, James has a lifetime outdoor best of 1:49.82. Seriously quick.
For my own part, I raced over 800 metres from 1967 (age 11) to 2012 (when I was 56). If you never utilise your fast-twitch muscle fibres, don't expect to be able to run fast. I raced 800 metres indoor once, in March 1975 at RAF St Athan, on a 174 metre unbanked concrete track, finishing second out of 10 runners in 2:02.0. I was 19.
Want to get inspired by this event? On You tube, watch David Radisha at London 2012, (which most people will remember) and Paul Ereng indoor at Budapest in 1989 (which most people won't - World Indoor Champs). Two world records - one from the front, one from the back - both sensational.
At first thought, you might think that David would be disappointed to finish 4th. I hope not - I thought that for a first championship it was a brilliant performance - faster round by round - and don't underestimate how hard it is to race 3 times in little more than 24 hours.
I think the club should be incredibly proud of what David has achieved, and I'm sure there's more to come.

Thanks for the kind words Mick.
What an experience the last few days have been. The organisation of the masters championships in Madrid was amazing. The athletes I meet from the other countries were really friendly but also very competitive (especially the Spanish)😃, and the standard of athletes at every age group was unreal.
For anyone who enjoys running on the track(whatever ability) and is able to run for the masters I would highly recommend such championships!
The next masters event is the world outdoor championships in Malaga(Sept). If I can get my wife's permission😃. I will run in the 800m once again and if I can stay fit and have a good summers training I will hopefully improve on my indoor times 👍

Well done Dave. I had hoped to go to Malaga but writing off this year and aiming for Venice 2019. Maybe see you there?

Shwmae/Hiya, I’m looking for Croups runners who would like to train on Tuesday evenings at the Leckwith track, who currently run approximately 9.00 - 9.15 minutes a mile, who want to improve, like myself, to do 8.45 - 9.00 miling.

My aim is to train on the track for quicker 5k and 10k times by the end of the year, and I’d be really pleased if anyone wanted to join me, as working together in a small group would be beneficial to us all.

Please post if you’re interested in starting next Tuesday, 3/4/18, or as soon as possible.

Diolch/Thanks

Geoff

Good idea Geoff. Maybe we ought to a off the couch session on the track to show people there's nothing to be afraid of. Alot people feel intimadated by the track. Maybe there could be a possiblity to do another eveing for those who are unable to make a Tuseday.

The track is there for everyone to use who wants to get faster, it does not matter what your pace is.

The more people that go to the track the easier it is for people to find suitable people to train with.

You would be amazed what the small commitment of a regular Tuesday track session will do for your pace!

Yes, that’s what I’m looking for, Lyndon. I had a very good chat with Dave James and Mick in the Clubhouse on Thursday night, and they gave me some great advice. I think that a small group of similar pace runners would really be beneficial over a period of time, I’m hoping that three months will show improvement.

Diolch/Thanks

Geoff
