Does anyone know what the ruling is in championships which includes age categories with regards gun time and chiptime. What takes priority your position or chip time? I was talking about it on Monday and didn't know the answer.

I can remember this causing a few issues years back with regards the older vet categories.

Matt H says age category winners are determined by gun position.

Just to clarify.........
Running is a visual sport, which means that whoever crosses the finish line first is the winner.
However - I have seen instances of the fastest chip time not winning the race.
Chip time is only used because of the size of fields, enabling every runner to effectively have a personal time.
It has the additional benefit of catching cheats (i.e. unless you can prove you passed through each timing mat, you haven't finished the race).
Chip timing was first introduced in the London Marathon in 1999. Prior to that scores of "bandit catchers" were employed on the course - catching around 200 cheats each year. I have overtaken countless morbidly obese runners in the final mile at London, wobbling down the course on their way to a sub 2:30 clocking.
