We're well into the Short Course Championship and yet another chance to register a track 3000m. In fact, you also have the chance to take advantage of the glorious weather that only Barry and in particular Jenner Park can provide.
Remember, whilst you do not have to be over 35 and a member of Welsh Masters, it helps the club gain valuable league points.

Did you know there are plans for a 3G pitch at Jenner Park but Barry & Vale Harriers are petitioning against the plans.

Mick talk about this at the club last night. If they go ahead at least two lanes of the track will be removed which means the track will be useless for competition and no more Barry Track 40. However, Mick has a pertiton on facebook and is plannig to write to MPS and conucillers.

Thank you for flagging this up, Amanda. I would urge everyone to sign the petition, local facilities like the track at Jenner Park are like gold dust to our sport. Feedback that I've already received throughout the UK is that similar battles are being fought - so often this is where the athletes of tomorrow begin their careers and we cannot afford to lose such facilities. I've also been informing friends throughout Barry who used to compete at Jenner Park and encouraging them to get involved. Athletics Weekly (published yesterday) carries a half page article.

Is there a representative that those who are not Facebook savvy can contact to voice our opinion?

Thanks, Mike. The co-ordinator of the campaign is the chair of Barry & Vale Harriers, Fred Malkin.
His e mail address is fred.malkin@yahoo.co.uk
I'm sure he'd be delighted to hear from anyone.

Would an invite to a local reporter to attend the Masters' event be worth considering?

Mick thinking about this, have you consider getting some famouse people on side. I was thinking of Ruth Jones from Gavin and Stacy thinking that because the series was made in Barry and also because she herself has taken up runnig and enjoys it. Also if I remeber rightly she wrote a message in the Cardiff Half Marathorn booklet once as Nessia which was both funny and encouraging. Also what about Colin Jackson and Tamya Grey - Thompson?

Colin Jackson might be useful as both he and Nigel Walker used to train regularly on the new " tartan " track before Cardiff had one .

Just beeen looking in Althetics weekly and there is an article on the development of Jenner Park. It seems it not only the runners are upset by this but the footballers are too. They say the money could be put to better use by using it to develope grass route football. Barry and Vale Harriers pertition has so far collected around 500 signatures. It's not right that one sport should be given piority over other. This happened before with the development of the stadium in town. Although we now have a 50 meter pool it took years to get and is privately owned which means you can't use your active card as with the Empire pool it was owned by the council.

Having read the article, the following section jumps out in relation to the viability of future track events such as the Barry 40.

Cllr John added that Barry and Vale Harriers athletic club was directly consulted on the plans and had met with, among others, the director of visible services and housing and himself.

And the club was also consulted as part of the initial feasibility study.

He said: "We have done everything possible to accommodate athletics at Jenner Park. All of the running track lanes are being retained and the majority of disciplines currently practiced at Jenner Park will continue unaffected by the introduction of the new synthetic surface, even during construction. We would be happy to look at alternative locations in Barry to accommodate throwing events, which would include the hammer, an event that currently isn’t possible on the grass surface at Jenner Park."

As last season the Jenner Park fixture has been designated to Les Croupiers and Rhondda as a joint home fixture. It would be appreciated if we had volunteers for the following tasks:
Registration and raffle - record names, clubs, ages and membership, collect entry fees or raffle money - we will need one to assist Pauline from the Rhondda. Registration usually starts at about 5:30 and ends at about 7. Committee could cover until about 6 but we will need help from then on.

Throws - Rhondda will deal with both throwing events
High jump - record, assist recorder by helping reset bar and so on.
Long jump - spike, pull through and measure, record, rake
The same people can cover both jumps
Track judges - assist with counting laps by runners, note numbers on vests of finishers.

The following have already come forward:
Roy Silver
Julie Broughton

Thank you.

haven't ever competed at one of these events before, although I did help out at Jenner Park last year. Can someone tell me (1) how much it costs to enter (per event?) and (2) how early before the event I need to arrive to register?

as an aside, I'm assuming as it's a Masters event, my 12 yr old won't be able to compete? (he's ever so keen to get on the track!)

thanks

It cost £5 for master members and you can do as many events as you wish. Remeber the 3,0000 meters is now part of the club champs. I seem to remember children entering last year as guests. The frist event is at 7, so anytime after 6.30.

Karen under 15's form the youngest group.
The women's fixture was won by Les Croupiers with Brecon second, Worcester third and Rhondda fourth. After two fixtures Les Croupiers 40, Brecon 36, Rhondda 30 and Worcester 16.
There are matters to be resolved before the result of the men's fixture can be confirmed but I believe that Brecon and Newport were the principals.

I would like to thank those members who turned out to participate, officiate and support at Jenner Park.
