I googled Steve Smythe, who was 1st 55-59 runner in the latest park run. In an article in Runner's World, Smythe said that the 1983 race was short. Has this been confirmed/denied? It affects the club's all time marathon rankings.

"" .. I regret missing the 1983 London, which prevents me having an ever present status. Instead I ran and won a mile race that day, though according to Hugh Jones, the 1982 London winner, and now one of the foremost course measurers in the world, 1983 was short, so I could argue I have done all the proper London Marathons!"

If there is any doubt perhaps it should be discounted from the club rankings

I don't think anyone can give a definitive answer, Mike. I asked Hugh Jones, the course measurer, this very same question and the roads used for the 1983 marathon don't exist any more.
It may be that the evidence is purely circumstantial - i.e. a lot of runners ran PBs in perfect conditions. London Marathon, I'm quite sure, will not admit to anything. The problem with rumour is, it can be very destructive, and many outstanding marks from the past have been called into question because the science of accurate measurement didn't have the same rigour as today.
Of course, seeing as my PB was set in 1983, I have a vested interest. So as far as I'm concerned, it was accurate, unless anyone can prove otherwise!
