Has anyone done this? If so what did they think of it? I know races in Newport tend to be a bit doggy. I remember the Newport Transporter Bridge 5k, there was always discussion as to whether or not they were actually 5k. But the half marathorn seems to be getting popular but they still got along way to go to beat Cardiff! Come to think of it why are Newport races always a bit doggy? I mean Barry had a great 5k and now they don't do it anymore.

I must say you've got a way with words, Tracey. Races are only as good as the people who organise them. I wouldn't say Newport Races are any better than Cardiff's or Barry's.
For example, we try to pick races for the club championship which we know will be organised well. There are races I wouldn't run for personal reasons, but I wouldn't criticise them on a forum.

Steve Hitchen ran this last year and he seemed to like it. You will never get the perfect race where ever you are, at least this is on your doorstep.

I think she means that some events are known to be not accurately measured. although they are well organised.
I remember doing a 10 miler starting at the celtic manor that used to get a ribbing. loads of le' crups did it anyway. we enjoyed the event.
go and have a go.

To be fair, it wasn't a short course ( despite suffering from the reputation of the previous, poorly organised 'marathon'), wasn't a big field and despite a few bridges and pinch points was a reasonably straightforward course. I think I said at the time that a large increase in numbers could have caused problems.

They were talking about changing the course to accommodate more runners and this certainly seems the case since they're starting at Rodney Parade (some egg-chasing venue, apparently) rather than the athletics stadium (Lliswerry).

There may be politics involved but I would say that it's worth supporting local races if you can. Maybe not the perfect race but do you want it to continue and improve or kill it at birth?

The stadium start and finish was good, particularly encouraging a sprint finish for the last 200m around the track (not this year unfortunately).

Anyway, cheaper and closer than Bath (sold out) so if you want to do it... if you don't... :-)

I think it's of interest to a fair few, however I would say it's only worth taking part if the course is accurately measured and the race certified.

You got a good point there Mick. We almost lost Cardiff cause of bad organisation. I just wanted to know people options as I had heard that the marathon didn't have an WAA permit and that one year the runner were directed the wrong way. Yes I know Cardiff had the same problems. Sorry if I was too critical of it but even Cardiff still have room for improvements. There is always room for improvements otherwise complicacy sets in. Anyway no hard feelings and here to Newport getting bigger and better.

The previously held marathon was a complete shambles by all accounts. I don't know if any of the people involved are associated with the half. Seemed to go smoothly enough last year.

Personally, I'm waiting to see the course before I decide on this year.

I believe this Newport half marathon is not organised by the same person(s) as the ill-fated marathon. That was just a one-off fundraising venture if I remember correctly. It would be good to hear that Newport is properly measured and certified.

I'll email them to ask now. Meant to do it last night.

Emailed the organisers earlier and had this reply...

Hi Stephen,
The course was measured this morning – it is very very similar to last year, a few tweaks, but basically is still on the riverfront and the cycle pathway.

As soon as the course measurer has drawn up his plans, we will be contacting everyone who has entered, and uploading it onto the website.

Sorry it’s taken so long! There will be some road closures, and it has taken time to get them drawn up and approved.

Kind regards,

Christine Vorres

I did this race last year. As already said it did have a few pinch points but over all it was well organized. I would recommend it Tracy.
