Dear me, what a shambles. People from all over the country and they couldn't guarantee a water supply.

Its such a shame,I read 5000 runners at the start.. they must have known last night..unless its a criminal issue.. I guess the story will come out in time..

the hard thing for the runners is that we are at the end (almost ) of spring half marathon season so all that training to waste.. there wont be time to enter another now.. wait till sept now.. i guess.

You cannot go to the web site it is crashed.. its a shame as it did have good runners world reviews last year..

Most runners actually ran it including myself!

When they announced it was cancelled because of insufficient water about 100 of us at the front were booing. We then ripped off our numbers and declared we were going on a Sunday run.

Further down the road police bikes tried to block our way but we dodged around them an proceeded to run the course.

We were later followed by the masses. It was like a protest run through Sheffield at first and for me then became an aggressive long run.

The support around Sheffield was still there and sensational. The irony is I have never been offered so much water as local radio had let the public know about the problem.

At the turnaround I noticed hundreds of runners wearing numbers and it got me wondering if I could still get a time as I had stuffed my number down my pants.Time will tell as I got it out and waved it at the sensor at the end. My Garmin read 1.23.52 but im sure I would have been a good bit quicker without the debarcle!Angry

Storming the barricades ..... Lyndon....I'm envious....only managed an 8 mile run up to Coed Ely and back.

I've run Sheffield several times and always enjoyed the support, particularly at Cemetry Road and Brammell Lane.

Two hundred miles is quite a distance to travel..... and I'm thoroughly delighted that your trip was not in vain....

.....nothing like returning the streets to the runner(pedestrians).

In other possible good news, BBC are reporting that as long as the runners had their chip on them then they would receive a time and results would be posted later this afternoon.

Shambles. Such a shame as it's a really well supported half. Well done for running anyway Lyndon.

A classic (perhaps even 'manic') moment. Lyndon, you handled that situation brilliantly. What a star. Respect.

It could be bad karma - this the same Sheffield that recently demolished (rather than maintain) Jes Ennis' 1990s built track/stadium. After a winter of floods, and the release of 'Noah' (casting Russel Crowe just asking for trouble..) a year of drought for all of us now inevitable?

Also unravelling further judging by posts appearing on-line:

- Race numbers that never arrived / were received the day before...
- Change to the planned finish (previously THAT stadium - now demolished..)
- PA system wasn't set-up at the start ; so no means of communicating with 5000 runners (what if a major emergency?)
- Lots ran unaware it had been 'cancelled' (until they hit the empty water stations..)

Re the 'Water Bowers didn't turn-up' thing, would it have worked even if they had? I 'managed' the busy 7m water station at the 2013 Cardiff Half (luckily, the army of volunteers present had much more experience and noose than me..). Unscrewing and handing out 000's of water bottles to thirsty runners was challenging itself (tip - BRING GLOVES), but there is no way we could have done this had we had to fill cups from 'bowsers'.

Lessons learnt: Be more appreciative of events closer to home (we're spoilt), our very own H2O sponsor (Brecon Carreg, provide water for the Castles, Cardiff Half and so many other events?) and those that plan/worry about such things. Who'd be a Race Director!

Sometimes things like this bring out the best in people and restore your faith in human nature!BigGrin

"We heard that the race was cancelled because one station did not have any water to give out," said Mr Redfern, a construction site manager.

"I went into a local shop and bought all the bottles they had and stood outside the shop and handed them out to runners as they started to go past. When they had gone I went for the big bottles and these went too.

"One runner going past thanked me and gave me £10 to buy some more."

Actually, in addition to my previous post, I remember that the water station around Bramall Lane was a nightmare when I did it. Perhaps rose-tinted Sheffield glasses.
