If you're quick you can see a young McGeoch (34 seconds, wearing a Spiridon vest!) just ahead of Joyce Smith. Didn't recognise any others though.

In 1981 there was no official women race in London although London was one of the few marathons that women could enter. In 1984 the Olympics held the first women marathon since then women distance running has grown from strength to strength. I didn't notice Mick but I believe he did pace the women when they started holding a women race. I think the women he paced was Ingrid Christina who define the no women rule at Boston. Cheeky blokes said women were too week to run marathons!

Joyce Smith is one of the all-time greats of British athletics. As a younger runner, she won the English National Cross Country Championship (AAA) in 1959 and 1960 and 1973.She broke the world record for the 3000m 1971, and was 3rd in 1971 world cross country championships, 1st in 1972 and 2nd in 1973. At the age of 43 she was 1st lady in the London Marathon in 1981, in 2.29.57 and again in 1982, in 2.29.43.

I don't know if Mick was actually a pacemaker for the ladies' marathon. In the 80s he was Mr Consistency, running between 2.17 and 2.20 for most of them, so only Ingrid Kristiansen would have been able to keep up with him! Mick is on the left of the screen, by the way.

I was aware of Mick's times for the marathon and at times you see what other members achieved in their heyday.
For me it's a shame you can't click on a member and see what their best times were/are for various distances like you can on the fetcheveryone website.I think that would be very interesting.
I know that involves members actually telling ED their actual PB's and not their best over the last 7 years.
I do think the info we see on this site is great, but just out of interest I would love to be able to see some of those amazing stats that a lot of members have, but we don't always know about them.

A set of all-time rankings (for all distances) is in preparation and will be published soon.

We can easily get that data into the system Peter, just need someone to volunteer to transfer all the times from Jeff's all time list. If you look at the rankings it has already been done for the marathon.

The problem with enabling everyone to add their own times as on fetch is that it multiplies the chance of errors getting into the database.

Peter, as marathon is of particularly interest to me, I have marathon career details of many of our faster athletes, which I'm happy to share.

I will certainly look forward to seeing the publication of those results.
